Who wants to get scuffs and marks all over their beautiful floors — NO ONE!

That’s we made this unsexy yet practical guide on protecting and maintaining that beautiful finish. Enjoy!

Who doesn’t love hardwood floors? They look beautiful, are easy to clean, and don’t stain nearly as easily as carpet.

However, hardwood floors require a certain level of maintenance to protect their coating and integrity. Over time, hardwood floors can degrade and break down– resulting in mold, grayish ultra noticeable streaks, and structural damage.

Maintaining your hardwood floors is actually quite easy. We put together a guide on how to maintain and protect hardwood floors the right way.

Are you ready to learn how to maintain and protect hardwood floors to keep your home looking sharp? Check out our guide below!

How to Maintain and Protect Hardwood Floors

Maintaining and protecting hardwood floors doesn’t have to be such a tedious task.

No more shoes inside

Most households adhere to this custom, but it’s very important to keep shoe grime at the door so it doesn’t degrade your hardwood floors.

Grit such as gravel, rocks, glass, and anything else we step on during the day gets embedded into our footwear. This rips apart the finish of hardwood floors, and the dirt that is also stuck to our shoes gets embedded underneath the finish.

The result is dirty looking floors that never seem to get clean no matter how often you wash them. Not a good look.

Chance up your routine and put doormats at all the entries of your home. Tell guests to take off their shoes when they come in. This should especially be enforced for avid wearers of stiletto high heels or soccer cleats.

Animal-proof your hardwood floors

Dogs have sharp toenails. Cats have sharp claws.

Since both of these common furry friends walk on all floors, they are very likely contributing to small scratches on the surface of your floor.

Prevent this by regularly clipping your pets’ nails. This is something you should be doing anyway for them, so why not protect your new hardwood floors at the same time?

Keep your floors clean

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.8.1″ src=”http://www.furniturebuffers.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/wooden-floor-protectors.jpg” /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.8.1″]

Vacuum regularly.

While you don’t have to vacuum the hardwood floors, you should be vacuuming your carpet regularly– especially in spots where the hardwood meets the carpeting.

Dirt and grime like to get stuck in those spots, where they can embed into the edges of the floor.

Sweep with a soft broom.

It may be tempting to purchase a cheap broom, but the bristles of brooms can really wear down the coating of your hardwood floors. Opt for a broom with soft bristles and sweep every other day if possible.

Mop regularly..

Each time you sweep, you should follow up with a good mopping. Using a mop with a damp microfiber pad and a cleaning solution that won’t break down your hardwood, mop thoroughly.

Get those spills when they happen. .

Be quick to clean up spills, even just water, when they happen. Liquids can warp your hardwood and significantly damage the coating and finish.

Renew your hardwood finish

If you already have a hardwood floor with a not so pretty finish, don’t worry. All you need to do is give your floor a good cleaning, a light sanding, and a couple layers of polyurethane.

You should only be doing this once every couple of years. If you have just purchased new hardwood floors, consider asking the manufacturer about maintenance plans. Most maintenance plans are inexpensive or might even be free with the hardwood floor purchase, and you’ll never have to refinish the floors in the future.

Read the bottles and save some money on refinishing.

Never, ever use cleaners that contain the following:

  • Ammonia
  • Vinegar
  • Wax or waxy substances
  • Polishes
  • Oil-based soap

These materials can quickly cause dulling or degradation to the top of the hardwood floor coating. Waxes and oils, in particular, can even cause problems with refinishing your floor in the future– costing you more money in the long run.

There’s a simple way to test the quality and hardwood floor-friendliness of a cleaner. Spray the product on glass or a mirror and wait for it to dry. Once dried, check to see if any residue is clearly visible or if any oiliness is easily felt.

If the product doesn’t pass the test, don’t use it. Plain and simple.

Rugs can be Sneaky Savers

Even if you want to show off your hardwood floors in their entirety, it’s helpful to strategically place some padding in various spots.

Putting any type of rug near doorways, by high-traffic areas, and underneath areas where people typically eat is wise. This way food and debris won’t come into contact with your floors as often. Plus, scratches will be more minimal over time.

Just be sure to check the backing of the rugs you purchase. Rubber-based backings of rugs can cause discoloration in hardwood floor coating.

Invest in Furniture Buffers

What’s the biggest culprit behind hardwood floor damage? Furniture, of course!

Think of all the times you’ve rearranged your living room or dining room and heard the terrible sound of metal or jagged wood against or digging into hardwood, only to find some deep-set ugly marks left into your precious floor?

This is completely avoidable. Furniture pads are small felt pads that stick onto the bottom of chair legs, table legs, and any other heavy pointy object in your household that could damage your floor when moved. The soft pads come into contact with the floor rather than the edges of the furniture, making it super easy to protect hardwood floors from intense scratches.

You can also get larger rectangular felt furniture pads to put underneath large pieces of furniture like hutches that don’t have typical pointy legs.

Plus, furniture pads make heavy objects easier to slide around on hardwood. The benefits just seem endless.

Reviews from Customers

“This package of pads just keeps on giving. We recently had wood floors installed and had to put the pads under all our furniture. The size variety really came in handy. So far they have stayed on the furniture and seem pretty durable. Would buy again.”

Cindy – Amazon Customer Review on January 11, 2017

“Does exactly what you would expect, nothing less. My only complaint is that my wife won’t stop putting them on unnecessary items. I understand she doesn’t want the dog scratching up the floor, but come on.”

Austin Mercer – Amazon Customer Review on December 21, 2016

“Really stick well!! So well that if you don’t get them on correctlymthe first time you’ll have a heck of a time getting them off!”

Colie – Amazon Customer Review on November 29, 2016

“I moved to a house with hardwood floors, and these things are mandatory there. I found these through random searching, they were a good price, and work an absolute treat. They protect the floors, and as a lovely bonus, make even heavy furniture slide around like it was on ice. The pack comes with enough sizes and shapes to fit just about anything. I would absolutely order these again.”

Our Felt Pads are the Best

Premium isn’t a label, it’s the standard we set

Sticky as Syrup Adhesive

They’re going to stick.

Have you ever got syrup on your hand?

That’s how sticky our self-adhesive backing is. And that means everything with floor protectors because they must STICK!

If you touched your index finger to the exposed pad to the right, you’d lift up the entire sheet – We’re talking seriously sticky!

We also use an ultra compressed felt so every pad is firm (and dense) but also super soft up against your floors.

Our felt pads are also designated as Medium-Slide meaning they’re not made as gliders but they are soft enough that you can slide most heavy furniture with them.
